Course Reflective Narratives
I took this course my first semester at CSU Monterey Bay during spring 2022. For this course, SPAN 301, I was able to expand upon my foundation of the Spanish language. This being one of my first two upper-division Spanish language courses, I was nervous but motivated to start the second half of my undergraduate academic career. I was challenged with developing my grasp of the Spanish language through different modes of communication such as written and verbal presentations. In my understanding of the course, there was an overall theme of refinement and advancement towards improving my understanding of the language. For example, we went over transitional phrases that improve the flow of our sentences in both everyday speech and academic writing. On the theme of refinement, we found that there are high-frequency words such as “que” or “como” that we can look out for and rephrase using a different word choice that refers to a different type of comparison. The form of written analysis was also an important part of this course, as it introduced me to the different types of writing depending on the topic. This would include narrative, argumentative, descriptive, or persuasive writing concerning specific topics given to us. Because this was an upper-division Spanish language course, I was able to meet the requirements for MLO 1, which required me to communicate completely in the Spanish language regardless of the mode of communication. My final project tasked me with making a critical essay of some aspect of Hispanic culture detailing the struggles and discrimination of the LGBT+ community in Mexico. In this essay, I elaborated on different aspects of medical discrimination, educational discrimination, and rights discrimation. One of the biggest things that I learned in this class is the importance of revision or critique of my writing. This is very important in my future studies in the Spanish program where I plan on keeping the desire to improve my writing every chance that I have.
