MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products - both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) - of Hispanic societies.
Under the requirements of MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge, I have met this requirement in the following courses.

Reflective Narratives
MLO 3 covers a broad but imperative study into Spanish, Latinx, & Chicanx cultures through their outputs in literature, culture, cinema, art, and other fields of emphasis. Through building literary and cultural knowledge, I was able to analyze familiar experiences and deeply engage with narratives unfamiliar to me. I experienced great personal growth within this MLO because the themes covered in the course often resonate greatly with an experience or feeling. Some texts have had a lasting impact on who I am today and inspire me to continue working through this field of expertise. To meet MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge, I took two classes. One of these classes was SPAN 301s: Service Learning in the Chicano / Latino Community with Dr. González. In this course, each week we addressed a different aspect of Chicanx/Latinx society such as multiculturalism in the classroom, bilingual education/multilingual environments in general, and other historical developments within the scope of the class. The class was taught in Spanish which tasked me with communicating in Spanish through writing, discussion, and presentations. An example of this is represented in my service learning presentation as part of the final segment of the class. Another class I took for this MLO was SPAN 321: Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature: Spain. I took this course during the Fall semester of 2022 with Dr. Vila Dieguez. This was the first course I had ever taken involving peninsular literature and culture. I specifically chose this class due to the fact that I wanted to challenge myself to learn something different from what I had previously studied, which heavily involved Latin American culture and literature. One thing that became evident in this class was how different the Spanish language was in its earliest forms. While this led to some difficulty, we were exposed to a story in itself purely in looking at the word usage. One of my favorite stories we read was La Celestina which further inspired my final paper which was based on the stories and the love and comedy that was portrayed.
