Reflective Narratives
A fundamental aspect of the Spanish Major is proficiency in the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational variations of communication in Spanish. I employed these skills in every one of my Spanish language classes, although I will highlight some more prominent examples that fulfilled this requirement. I have taken two classes that stand out in the language proficiency MLO. The first is Span: 301 Comp/Oral Practice. I took this class with Dr. Vila Dieguez in the Spring of 2022. In this class, we had to write in different styles of writing, for example writing narratives, reports, argumentative, reviews, etc. At the end of this class, I completed a research paper on La comunidad LGBT+ en México, “The LGBT+ community in Mexico.” This project was fascinating since I am a person that is very passionate about Mexico and the LGBT+ community and was able to discuss this topic using academic Spanish throughout my paper. Besides this final essay, I had to present an informative PowerPoint focused on a topic of my choice related to the Spanish language. I decided to focus my presentation on the state of Michoacán. Overall, my experience in SPAN 301, helped me to develop my Spanish in a fluent and professional way. Another class I took that helped me fulfill this MLO, is Span: 304 Intro To Hispanic Literature. I completed this class in the Fall of 2022 with Dr. Pablo Oliva. This class was fascinating to me since it allowed me to analyze different aspects, times, and forms of literature. For example, we analyzed literature (poems, plays and short stories) considering both the historical and cultural context of the work being studied.. At the same time, it was a somewhat complicated class since it demanded close analysis of the meaning that the author wanted to make known. The most difficult aspect of the course was the analysis of poetry because it is more difficult to interpret due to the fact that there are a lot of characteristics and traits that go with poetry. For this class, every week we had to reflect on one of the assigned readings, sharing our point of view and opinions about the reading and the potential meaning behind it. Luckily, in this class I did not have to complete a written final assignment but I did have to participate in a group presentation about an author and one of their well known poems.
